MONDAY-- You will be picked up Monday morning in Anchorage and driven 2.5 hours north on the scenic Glenn Hwy. to the remote community of Sheep Mountain.  After getting settled into the luxurious rooms of the Majestic Valley Lodge, a brief (but important) gear check will be completed by your guide.  Dinner will be served in the beautiful Majestic Valley Lodge dining room on Monday evening.

TUESDAY-FRIDAY—On Tuesday morning, a small bush plane will transport the guide and clients to a predetermined wilderness destination.  Routes are chosen to match the desires, skill, and fitness of the clients.  This decision is made after we have had an opportunity to communicate in person.  Alaska Wilderness Trails provides tents, cooking supplies, food, and a sat-phone. Backpackers provide all of their own personal gear (see equipment list).

FRIDAY NOON—The airplane will pick you up and return you to Sheep Mountain for a hot shower, delicious dinner, and soft bed at the Majestic Valley Lodge.

SATURDAY—You can decide whether you want to raft the wild Matanuska River, trek the blue ice of the Matanuska Glacier, or enjoy a day hike from your front door.  All activities are coordinated with professional services and are included in the price.  Your final evening will be spent at the Majestic Valley Lodge enjoying another fine meal before your departure the following day.

SUNDAY—Alaska Wilderness Trails will deliver you back to Anchorage to the destination of your choice.

NOTE:  This itinerary works very well, but is fully negotiable depending on your preferences.  Price does not include personal gear, alcohol, tips.

A friendly guide will pick you up in Anchorage and transport you 2.5 hours North to Sheep Mountain

For guided trips, Alaska Wilderness Trails provides: tents, cooking supplies, food (in the field), and a sat-phone. Backpackers provide all of their personal gear (see equipment list). Nearby lodging and restaurants are available for the day(s) before and after the trip.

Wilderness Drop-Off (no guide)

We have been dropping hikers off in the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains for decades.  For longer expeditions, we also provide "re-ration" services.  Note:  we are happy to transport you into the wilderness unguided, but highly recommend a significant level of navigation proficiency and wilderness experience.  These wilderness areas are very remote- our business name may use the word "trails," but the only trails you are going to see are those made by the caribou and sheep.

AWT is centrally located between the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges, which offer great diversity in backcountry travel. For guided trips there are three different general options available: High Talkeetna Trek, Fossil Trek, Iceberg Lake Trek. See below for further explanation. Once a general preference has been established, a more specific route will be planned.

Sample Hikes -

-High Talkeetna Trek- A moderately difficult hike in the high alpine of the Talkeetnas with stunning views, wildlife, and (often) excellent grayling fishing. The absence of underbrush and major river crossings make traveling easy and quick- 20 miles can easily be covered on an average length trip.

-Fossil Trek- A moderately-easy trek in the Lower Talkeetna Range. The terrain is high-alpine and routes can be relatively flat or challenging (depending on hiker’s preference) in this region of obvious geologic formations, fossils, and caribou herds.

-Iceberg Lake Trek- A moderately- difficult hike with great possibilities for day hikes! The highlight of this trip is the time spent among icebergs abandoned when the "iceberg lake" drained beneath them.

The high alpine terrain of all our hikes is unbeatable!  The bush plane lands well above the trees and brush, so the views are astounding.  We land on mountain tops, glaciers, and gravel bars.  There are wildlife to view, fossils to find, and mountains to climb- so get up here!
